                                       Lady Jags Keep Rolling

Once again, in just our second tough contest of the year, Whit stepped up, draining back to back threes late in the fourth quarter, helping the Jags to a 56-45 win over R-S Central.

The Jags led most of the way, although R-S led briefly in the fourth quarter. The Lady Hilltoppers had momentum going and trailed by just a point when Whit went back to back, extending the lead to seven, and seemingly breaking the spirit of the Lady Toppers. Despite going 2-8 from the free throw line late in the game, Forestview held on for their eighth consecutive win to start the season.

Whit had hit a trey earlier in the game, finishing with 9 points on 3-5 from the floor. She also had several assists, although the final numbers are not yet available. She did not attempt a free throw.

The Jags looked like they may run away and hide early, leading 30-20, before Frances Hernandez nailed a buzzer-beating three to narrow the halftime lead to 30-23. They then outscored the Jags 12-8 in the third quarter, and it was anyone's game heading into the final eight minutes.

And it began to look early on in the fourth, that the home team would prevail. R-S got another big lift from Appalachian State signee Frances Hernandez, who scored a game high 25 points. But Whit's late threes and the Jags ability to take care of the ball in the final couple of minutes sealed the win.

Forestview opens their conference play this Tuesday at Crest.

                                     Jags Dismantle Latin 71-46

In yet another easy win, the Lady Jags remained unbeaten with an easy 71-46 win over Charlotte Latin. The win propels the Jags to a 7-0 record and marks the 6th time this season the Jags have scored 70 or more points.

All focus is now pointing toward Friday night's rematch with R-S Central, this time on the road. The Lady Hilltoppers are especially tough at home and will be looking for a bit of revenge, after last week's four point loss to the Jaguars. R-S defeated Big South Conference foe East Gaston 54-44 this past Wednesday. That avenged a ten point loss at East Gaston a week earlier.

In the Jags earlier win over R-S, they needed Whit to hit 8 of 8 from the free throw line in the final 1:30 to secure the victory.

Whit's Free Throws Help Keep Lady Jags Unbeaten

In their first quality game of the season, Whit stepped up, hitting eight consecutive free throws in the last 1:30, to help the Lady Jags defeat R-S Central 60-56, and remain unbeaten. The final two from the line came with :04 remaining and the Jags up 58-56.

Whit hit three consecutive jumpers in the first period, including a three pointer, but they would be the only looks she would get until the third quarter. She missed her lone attempts in the third and fourth quarter, but was perfect from the charity strip. She finished the night with 15 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds.

The Jags led 13-7 after the first eight minutes and 28-24 at the intermission, as Frances Hernandez kept R-S in the game. She would finish with a game high 27 points.

Forestview was outrebounded in the game 58-36 and despite Whit's 8-8, the Lady Jags were a dismal 15-29 from the free throw line. Now 6-0 and ranked 7th in the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16, Forestview will travel to Charlotte Latin this coming Tuesday.

Jags Off to Quick 5-0 Start

The Lady Jaguars are off to an impressive 5-0 start, winning five games by an average margin of 37 points per game. The Jags have scored seventy or more points in all five games, and have yet to be challenged.

The Jags are aware these wins have come against very weak teams, so they are yet to be overly excited. Forestview has led by as little as four and as many as twenty-two points after the first quarter of each game, although the four point margin ended up being the biggest final margin of forty points.

Those of you that know Whit the best, know she is not about "padding" her stats against weaker competition, as she is more interested in the win. In fact, she has taken but twenty-two shots through the first five games. Although she did have a 10 assist game, even the importance of that is underscored, due to the competition level.

The Jags will get their first real challenge this Friday, when they play host to R-S Central. Forestview has lost six straight to the Lady Hilltoppers, during Whit's high school career.

Whitney Named All-Conference Third Year In A Row

The Big South All-Conference team was announced earlier this week and Whit was once again named to the honor. Whit views this as a big honor, as the opposing coaches in the conference vote for the team.

It marks the third consecutive year she has received the honor. Whit has now set herself up to do what only a handful of area girls have done, and that is make the All-Conference team four consecutive years.

This year was especially trying for Whit as she battled through a nagging injury the second half of the season. She averaged 10 points, 5 assists and 2 steals per game, while leading the Jags with 54 made three pointers. She also led the team in charge fouls drawn and minutes played, while averaging less than four turnovers per game.

Whit's best friend and Georgia Tech signee Tiffany Blackmon was named Conference Player of the Year for the third consecutive year.

Great job to both of you!

Jags Lose Playoff Berth Draw; Season Comes To A Close

It was a topsy-turvy Saturday for the Lady Jag players and coaching staff, but in the end, they were ousted from the state playoffs by losing a draw. The Jags had finished the regular season with an identical 13-11 record as Enka High School, and fully expected to be involved in a draw or a coin flip. However, when the playoff brackets were posted, Enka was in and the Jags out, without either.

Coach Ken Beaty called the North Carolina High School Athletic Association to make certain they knew the two teams were tied. Ironically, the state said Enka had reported an incorrect record a week ago and the state had not caught the error. Beaty was told there would be a draw and he would be called back. Thirty minutes later, he got the call saying the Jags were out and their season was finished.

In another side of this playoff twist, conference foe South Point earned a wildcard spot by having a better won-loss percentage than the Jags, finishing the regular season at 13-6. The Raiders opted to play only 19 games, with all 7 non-conference games coming against 1-A and 2-A schools. Those schools had a combined record of 21-52. (.288 percentage)

Meanwhile the Jags, a 3-A school like South Point, lost five non-conference games to schools with a combined record of 77-25. (.755 percentage). Aside from that, the Jags beat South Point two out of three times this season. But even had the Jags beat the Raiders all three times, it would not have made a difference. South Point's winning percentage would still have been better. The Jags would had to have went 16-8 and beat South Point all three times to beat the Raiders out. So much for playing a tough schedule and trying to improve.

With that being said, it has no doubt been a trying season. Whit played through an achilles injury the second half of the season and will get some much needed rest before starting travel team practice on March 7th with the Queen City Dynasty.

Thanks to everyone for your emails of support to Whit concerning her injury.

Jags Lose For Third Time To Huskies

In what was probably the sloppiest game played all year, the Lady Jags dropped a 57-41 decision to Hunter Huss, in a game that was much closer than the score would indicate, although the rebounding margin was not.

The Huskies outrebounded the Jags 45-24 on the night, with 17 offensive rebounds in the second half. Despite shooting only 1-17 from the floor in the third quarter, the Huskies would only be outscored 9-7 as they dominated the offensive glass.

Huss had decided from the start to take the ball out of Whitney's hands, as she was 5-8, including 4-7 from the arc the last time these teams met. The Huskies played a man to man defense for the first time all season, virtually daring the Jags to go inside. The strategy worked, as Whit was held to just four field goal attempts and backcourt mate Jasmine Camp was held to just five attempts.

The Jags managed to stay close as the Huskies looked nothing like the conference champions. Huss, who is not normally a very good shooting team, was 19-59 (32%) and committed 25 turnovers. They seemed rattled by the Jags press, but Forestview had once again dug too big of a hole for themselves.

They would expend too much energy fighting back, closing the gap to 39-33 with 5:46 remaining, but not having enough gas to get over the hump. The Jags would begin fouling and Huss would convert 6-8 down the stretch to seal the win.

Although Whit was scoreless for the first time all season, she played an excellent floor game, with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and only 2 turnovers. She once again drew another charge foul.

The Jags, like the Huskies, also had 25 turnovers and shot 31% (15-48) from the floor.

Forestview is now 14-12 on the season and will probably not know if they have qualified for the state playoffs until Saturday.

Forestview Extends Season; Defeats South Point

With their state playoff hopes still doubtful at best, the Lady Jags played for pride and soundly defeated the South Point Red Raiders 81-64. The win not only extends the Jags season, but also gives them a rematch with conference champion Hunter Huss.

The Jags jumped on South Point early and often, hitting 10-16 from the field in the first quarter to take a 23-16 lead. The two teams played a pretty even middle two quarters, with the Jags outscoring the Raiders 17-16 each quarter, to take a 57-48 lead into the final eight minutes.

Whit and Jasmine Camp scored six points each in the final quarter to seal the win for the Jags, avenging a loss less than two weeks ago. Unfortunately, it is that loss that looms big right now in whether the Jags qualify for the state playoffs.

Whit finished the night with 15 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds and a steal. And as is becoming the norm, she took two charging fouls. The Jags committed 14 turnovers on the night, with Whit having two.

Jessica Capers led all scorers with 24 points and also pulled down 11 rebounds, 10 on the offensive end. Camp finished with 13 points and 8 assists, while Ashley Pratt chipped in 14 points.

Forestview shot 49% from the floor (33-67) , while the Raiders shot 46% on 24-52. The Jags were able to force the Raiders into 21 turnovers, many in the backcourt.

Forestview is now 14-11 and will face the Huskies Wednesday night at 7:30. Along with the Huskies comes senior center Tiffany Blackmon. Blackmon has pretty much demonstrated she is the best player in the area, commanding an array of attention on the offensive end.

However, it is her defense which dominates games, as going right at her has proven to be a mistake. The Jags will no doubt have to have a plan for keeping her in check. In the last meeting she finished with 25 points, 17 boards and 4 blocks.

Jags Effort Falls Just Short In Loss To Warriors

The Lady Jags turned in a gallant effort, but fell just short, losing for the third time this season to East Gaston by a score of 52-46. Forestview led most of the first half and late in the fourth quarter, but had three defensive lapses which hurt significantly.

The Jags played a stingy man-to-man defense and completely denied the Warriors their much relied on, back-door cuts. The Warriors would not get a single back door basket the entire evening.

Forestview jumped out to an early 10-8 lead after the first eight minutes and were up 17-14 with 4:55 remaining in the half. The Warriors would go on a 15-6 run to end the quarter and lead 29-23 at the intermission.

The Jags would not quit though, as they got 6 points from Ashley Pratt in the third and took the lead at 34-33 with 2:50 remaining in the quarter. Whit hit her lone shot of the night, a three in the third also, but the Warriors would carry a 37-36 lead into the final eight minutes.

It looked as though the Jags would pull this one out, leading 44-41 with 3:15 remaining. East Gaston would go on a 7-2 run to take a 48-46 lead with 1:33 left in the game, a lead they would not relinquish.

Whit finished with 4 points, 5 assists, 1 rebound and 2 steals, while also taking a charge foul. The Warriors extended zone forced Whit to try and find shots, but it was not to be as she went 1-7. Her overall floor game was good though, as she turned the ball over just 3 times.

The numbers were eerily similar with the Jags hitting 18-45 from the floor and the Warriors 18-46. Forestview won the rebounding battle 22-21, while committing 20 turnovers to the Warriors 15.

The story was told at the line though, where the Jags were 8-10 and East Gaston 15-18. Many were down the stretch as the Jags were forced into fouling. East Gaston made their last seven, including four in a row in the final minute.

Forestview finished the regular season at 13-11 and will play in the meaningless Big South Conference Tournament, hosting South Point on Monday. Unlike years past, the tournament cannot help or hinder any team's playoff position or chances, due to us being in a split 3-A/ 4-A conference.

                            Blackmon Too Much For Jags

Despite showing a lot of heart in fighting back from a 23 point deficit, the Lady Jags once again could not handle Hunter Huss center Tiffany Blackmon, as the Huskies knocked off Forestview 65-53. The game was closer than the final score would indicate, as the Jags had to foul late in the game. Huss would convert their last seven free throws and ten of their last eleven to seal the win, though.

Blackmon all but solidified herself as the Conference Player of the Year, with a 25 point, 17 rebound, 4 block performance. The Georgia Tech signee was 7-10 from the free throw line, including 4-4 down the stretch. What separates Blackmon from everyone else in the area, is she is usually battling double and triple teams, night in and night out. No other player commands that type of attention.

Whit had another good game with 14 points and 4 assists, but the Jags could not find her enough shots, as she was 5-8 from the field, including 4-7 from the arc. Whit has hit 16 of her last 37 shots (43%) from three point range. She also had but one turnover the entire evening.

Huss broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Jags 15-3 over the final 5:41 of the quarter. Forestview managed but seven shot attempts in the quarter, while turning the ball over 6 times. Olivia Reed scored 11 of her 13 points in that decisive quarter, hitting three threes and a layup.

Down 31-17 at the half, the Jags would fall even further back to begin the third, before clawing back on back to back threes from Whit. Forestview would still trail 46-31 entering the final eight minutes, and it looked as though Huss would cruise.

The Jags press rattled the Huskies though, as they went on a 10-0 run and trailed 46-38 with 6:30 remaining. Huss would maintain that lead the rest of the way for the most part. Whit hit her fourth three at the 2:51 mark, to make it 54-47. The Jags would close to six at 59-53 with :36.5 remaining, but Huss converted from the line to seal the win.

The numbers were pretty even with the Jags shooting 38% (21-56) and the Huskies 40%(22-55). Forestview was 4-9 from the arc, while the Huskies were 5-10. Huss held a slight edge on the boards at 35-31, while the Jags committed 13 turnovers to the Huskies 11.

Although the free throws were unbalanced, it was due more to the Jags fouling late, as the game was pretty well called. Forestview was 7-13 (54%), while Huss was 16-22(73%).

Forestview, who is now 13-10 and on the bubble for a state playoff berth, closes the regular season Friday night at East Gaston.

Forestview Rolls Over Green Wave 64-48

The Lady Jags got a much needed win tonight as they cruised past Ashbrook 64-48, in a game that was not as close as the score would indicate. The Jags led 48-29 going into the final quarter and held on as Ashbrook continued to play hard until the end.

Whitney scored 13 points, with four three pointers, to go along with 4 assists, 2 rebounds and a steal. She had a scary moment midway through the third quarter though, when she took an inadvertent elbow in the forehead from teammate Jessica Capers, while going after a loose ball. Whit would run down the floor and back before getting lightheaded and collapsing to the floor.

She sat and iced a big bump for the rest of the quarter, but convinced Coach Ken Beaty to let her return for the final period. And as fate would have it, Whit would step in and take a charge foul in the final quarter, which only confirmed, the elbow did not knock any sense into her.

Capers led all scorers with 22, while Ashley Pratt had 12 and Chrissy Buie chipped in 11. Seniors Hayley Anderson and Sara Sumner played their last regular season home game, with Anderson handing out 8 assists to go with 4 rebounds, while Sumner hauled in 9 boards.

The Jags shot 50% (26-52) from the field, but were a dismal 7-25 from the free throw line. Ashbrook won the battle of the boards 33-32, but were limited to 9 offensive rebounds.

The Jags(13-9, 6-4) travel to Hunter Huss Tuesday, to take on the conference leaders.

Jags Stumble; Lose Big To South Point

An inspired South Point team shot 44% from the floor and 17-26 from the free throw line, as they defeated the Jags 82-62 in conference play. The loss all but kills any shot the Jags had of tying for the conference championship.

Forestview was outscored in every quarter, only the second time that has happened this season. The rebounding tale was a big part of this game, as the Raiders outrebounded the Jags 43-29. This is a 22 rebound turnaround from the first meeting between these two teams.

The Jags defense was nowhere to be found the entire evening, as South Point continuously scored easy layups breaking the Jags press.

Whitney led all Jag scorers with 17, including 5 threes. She added 8 assists, 4 steals and a rebound. Chrissy Buie turned in her best offensive performance of the season with 14 points, to go along with 4 rebounds,  3 assists and 4 steals. Jessica Capers added 12 points and 3 assists.

The Jags shot 37% (25-68) from the floor, but got to the line only 9 times, hitting 6. South Point had 18 offensive rebounds which played a big part in the foul line discrepancy.

Forestview (12-9) will host Ashbrook on Friday.

Jags Hold On In Close One

Whit scored 11 of her 12 points in the crucial third quarter, as the Lady Jags had to scrap and fight for a tough 62-59 conference win over the North Gaston Warriors. This was a complete turnaround from the first meeting between these teams, as earlier in the year, the Jags led by 27 going into the last eight minutes and won by 17.

The North Gaston team has improved dramatically since early in the season, and it shows, particularly on the defensive end and the boards. The Warriors who are much smaller than the Jags, outrebounded Forestview 43-35, including 28 offensive rebounds.

Forestview jumped to an early lead and closed the first quarter up 15-8. They would then score the first eight points of the second quarter to push the lead to 15, but the Warriors went on a 21-4 run to take a two point lead into intermission. Despite the Jags shooting 6-7 from the field in the second quarter, they turned the ball over 13 times, enroute to a 30 turnover night.

Whit hit three threes and followed up a missed layup with a rebound bucket in the third, as the Jags regained control. Whit would finish with 12 points, 4 assists, 4 steals and 3 rebounds.

Jessica Capers led all scorers with 26, followed by Hayley Anderson with 15. Chrissy Buie turned in a stellar defensive effort, while handing out 5 assists and grabbing 3 rebounds.

The Jags shot 49% (24-49) from the floor, but were a horrendous 11-28 (39%) from the free throw line. North Gaston was 22-86(26%) from the floor, hitting 7 three-pointers. They also set a new opponent season high with 12 steals.

Forestview, now 12-8 overall and 5-3 in conference play, travel to South Point on Tuesday night.

Chargers Size Too Much For Jags

An old nemesis reared its ugly head again, as the Lady Jags gave up 25 offensive rebounds and were beaten by the Crest Chargers 60-53. The loss drops the Jags to 11-8 overall and 4-3 in Big South Conference play. It all but necessitates the Jags going unbeaten in their final five games, if they are to have a shot at the conference title. And even then, they'll need help from other teams.

The Jags led much of the way, although the game was close. Forestview enjoyed their biggest lead at 19-11 with 6:05 remaining in the second quarter. They would be outscored 12-6 the rest of the quarter though, to lead 25-23 at the break.

Crest would get 10 of their offensive boards in the third quarter though, and outscore the Jags 17-11 to take a 40-36 lead into the final eight minutes. The Jags started quick in the fourth and tied the game at 42-42 with 5:37 remaining. Crest would then reel off nine straight points, including six in a 42-second span to lead 51-42.

Whit stopped the run with a three pointer to narrow the margin to six with 3:07 remaining. The back breaking play for the Chargers came with 1:25 to go and the Jags down four, when Crest scored a big, virtually uncontested basket off of an offensive rebound.

Whit hit two free throws with 1:03 left to make it 55-51 Crest, and the Jags seemingly had some life. They could not convert down the stretch though, and Crest would hold on to even the season series.

Whit would finish with 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and 2 turnovers, including no turnovers in the second half. She was 5-6 from the line and actually played less than three quarters, as Coach Ken Beaty opted to try and rest her injured achilles.

The Jags shot 29.6% from the floor (19-64) and committed 22 turnovers. They were outrebounded 46-35, but more importantly, gave up 14 points on second chance shots. Crest shot 32% (23-72) to go along with 17 turnovers. They also came up with 10 steals, tying a season high for a Jags opponent, with South Caldwell and RS Central. Crest post players also blocked 9 Forestview shots.

Forestview will hope to get well again this Friday, when they play host to North Gaston.

January 19, 2006

                                 Jags Back On Winning Track

The Lady Jags played their best team ball since early in the season and got back in the win column with a 60-50 victory over Charlotte Latin. The game was not as close as the score would indicate though.

Forestview jumped to a 29-16 lead at the intermission and were in complete control of the game. Much of the same continued into the second half, as the Jags shot 44% and forced 24 Latin turnovers.

Whit decided to give it another go with the strained achilles and actually seemed to move pretty well. She finished with 7 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds, while taking a charge foul also. Unfortunately, with four minutes to go, Whit drove hard, making a layup, and came down on the foot of a Latin defender, again stretching an already painful achilles. She was carried off of the floor and is once again, questionable for next week's games.

The Jags led 58-37 at the time of the injury and Latin went on a 13-2 run to finish the game. Jasmine Camp led all scorers with 21 points.

Forestview travels to Crest on Tuesday.

January 18, 2006

                              Jags Drop Second Straight

The Lady Jags offense has virtually disappeared since Whitney re-aggravated an old injury last week, and the Jags scored a season low in a 59-38 loss to East Gaston. The loss drops the Jags into a tie for second place in the Big South Conference.

Forestview jumped to a 16-11 lead after the first 8 minutes, but tied a season low with a 4 point second quarter and trailed 29-20 at the intermission.

The much smaller Warriors outrebounded the Jags 30-19 in the last three quarters though, making a comeback impossible. Forestview gave up 13 offensive rebounds, with the Warriors converting many into baskets.

Whit did all she could do, but again was limited by her injury, and only scored 1 point. She did manage to run the offense with only 2 turnovers, but the Jags only shot 29% (14-49) from the floor. East Gaston shot 42%, while converting 16-29 from the free throw line.

The 10-7 Jags travel to Charlotte Latin for a non-conference game toomorrow.

January 13, 2006

Deja'Vu All Over Again; Huskies Drop Jags

As it always seems when these two teams meet, someone steps up big for the Lady Huskies, and tonight was no exception. Senior Courtney Radford, averaging 2 points a game, scored a career high 14 as she led the Huskies to a convincing 60-42 win over the Lady Jags.

Last year it was two other Huskies stepping up, when the Jags, like everyone else, strived to stop Huss center Tiffany Blackmon. Blackmon was held to 11 points, but it was her presence that opened the door for Radford.

The 42 points was the Jags lowest scoring output of the season, although the Jags shot a respectable 37%. Huss, employing a slow-down offense, shot 48% while outrebounding the Jags 35-25.

Huss led 20-14 at half, but erupted for 25 third quarter points to seal the victory. Whitney re-aggravated an old Achilles injury two days earlier, but decided to try and play through it. Unfortunately, she was limited to running the offense, as she could not push off to shoot properly. She managed 6 points and 4 assists, and is questionable for next week's games.

The Jags are now 10-6 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

January 10, 2006

                              Forestview Wins Third Straight

The Jags forced 36 Green Wave turnovers and were never challenged, as they remained unbeaten in conference play with a 65-28 win over Ashbrook. Forestview shot 53% from the floor, with most baskets coming on layups off of turnovers.

Whitney finished with 11 points (4-7), including three 3's, to go along with 4 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Unfortunately for Whit, she had her consecutive free throw streak come to an end after hitting 22 straight.

Jasmine Camp, Whit's backcourt mate, led all scorers with 24 points, while starting center Jessica Capers scored 16 points and grabbed 1 rebound. Hayley Anderson added 8 points and 5 rebounds.

If there was a black mark on the game, it was the Jags being outrebounded 30-18 and giving up 16 offensive rebounds. The Jags will clearly have to improve in this area Friday night, when they play host to Hunter Huss, currently tied for second place. Huss loss tonight to Crest, which for now, puts the Jags in sole possession of first place.

The Jags tied a season low with 16 turnovers, while picking up a season high 15 steals. Forestview is now 10-5 on the season.

January 6, 2006

                               Jags Still Unbeaten In Conference

Despite an all-around lackluster effort, Forestview escaped with a 58-50 home victory over South Point, to remain unbeaten in Big South Conference play. The Jags, 9-5 overall and 3-0 in the conference, played just good enough to win tonight.

Whit is fighting a chest cold, and was held to 6 points, with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 3 turnovers. Although her floor play was her biggest asset tonight, she coasted most of the way, trying to catch a breath here and there, while playing the entire game.

Forestview jumped to a 11-4 lead, but gave up 13 straight points and found themselves down by six. They fought back to take a 30-28 lead at half, but quite honestly, neither team had played very well. That trend would continue into the second half, with both teams shooting poorly.

The Jags finished at 29%, connecting on just 22 of 76 from the field. They did manage 30 offensive rebounds, but also gave up 22 offensive rebounds. Fortunately, for the Jags, South Point shot only 34% (18-53) and turned the ball over 28 times to the Jags 17.

Jasmine Camp led all scorers with 17 points. The Jags travel to Ashbrook on Tuesday night.

January 3, 2006

                             Jags Back On Winning Track

The Lady Jags got back in the win column with an easy 70-53 win over North Gaston, raising their conference mark to 2-0. The game was no where near as close as the score would indicate, as the Jags led 24-7 after the first quarter. Forestview's biggest lead of the night was 38-10 with 3:40 remaining in the first half.

The Wildcats made a minor run at the Jag reserves, to cut the lead to 39-17 at the intermission. Forestview took a 27 point lead into the final quarter, and the starters played sparingly in the final eight minutes.

Whit finished with 8 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and a career high 7 steals, while sitting out the final five minutes. She attempted to take take three charge fouls, but was not given the call on any of the attempts.

The Jags won the battle of the boards 40-30, but gave up 18 offensive rebounds to a much smaller Wildcats team.

Ashley Pratt led all Jags with 23 points. Forestview, now 8-5, will play host to South Point on Friday.

Warriors Hand Jags 2nd Straight Loss

The Lady Jags ran into an East Gaston team that shot 51% from the floor (23-45) and lost their second straight, 68-47, to the Warriors in the third place game of their holiday tournament.

The loss drops the Jags to 7-5 on the season, the same record they held at this time last year.

Whitney finished with 18 points, 2 assists and 2 steals, including 4 three pointers. She also drew another charge foul, her eighth in twelve games.

East Gaston led 29-22 at halftime, but outscored Forestview 27-11 in the third quarter, to put the game away. The Warriors were 18-35 from the free throw line, while the Jags were 4-13.

The Jags were outrebounded 29-27, but gave up only 5 offensive rebounds, an improvement from 16 the previous night. The Jags committed a season low 16 turnovers to the Warriors 13.

Jessica Capers added 11 points for the Jags.

South Caldwell Too Much For Jags

The Jags ran into their toughest opponent of the year and weren't up to the task, as they were dismantled by South Caldwell 74-50. The loss sends the Jags into the third place game on Friday, against conference foe East Gaston.

Whit finished with 10 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists to go along with an excellent floor game. South had relentless pressure on the Jags the entire evening, yet Whit still had only 3 turnovers.

The big story was on the offensive boards, where the Jags allowed 16, most of which were converted to baskets. South won the overall board battle 33-30.

Turnovers were another factor, as the Jags had 25 turns to their opponents 9.

Jasmine Camp led the way for the Jags with 14 points, while Jessica Capers had 13. Ashley Pratt had a game high 12 rebounds.

The Jags are now 7-4.

Jags Advance To Semis In Holiday Tourney

The Lady Jags jumped to a quick 19-4 lead after eight minutes and never looked  back, as they defeated Burns 58-48, advancing them to the semi-finals of the holiday tournament hosted by East Lincoln.

The Jags were able to go without a press and played very little man defense, in hopes of resting legs for the next two days. Forestview (7-3) will play South Caldwell at 7 PM Thursday night.

Whit never got on track scoring-wise, with just 2 points, but handed out 9 assists in playing an excellent floor game. Hayley Anderson led all Jags with 17 points, while Ashley Pratt had 15 and Jasmine Camp 12.

Burns outrebounded the Jags 45-36, amassing 18 offensive rebounds. Many of these were converted into baskets, which kept Burns relatively close. More importantly though, this prevented Forestview from getting into their running game in the last three quarters.

The Jags basically played good enough to win, but will need a much better effort against South Caldwell. The winner meets the winner of the Hopewell-East Gaston game in the finals, while the losers play for third place on Friday.

Anderson's Steal, Free Throws Seal Jags Win

Senior Hayley Anderson stole the ball and hit two free throws with :15 remaining to help seal the conference opener for the Jags, 59-55 over Crest. With the Jags up two, the Chargers tried to play high-low, but Anderson stole the ball as the post turned and the Jags had their win.

Whitney scored 14 points (4-9) from the arc and dished out 5 assists, while Anderson had 14 points also. Jessica Capers and Jasmine Camp had 13 and 10 respectively and Camp added 5 assists. It was the fifth time in nine games the Jags had at least four players in double figures.

Whit's biggest contribution may have come on the defensive end, where she drew four charge fouls, including two in the final quarter.

The Jags led 44-26 with 5:05 remaining in the third, but Crest went on a 16-7 run over the next seven minutes to cut the lead to 51-42 with 5:56 left in the game. A couple of Jag turnovers and the Chargers closed to within 55-50 at the 1:41 mark. Brittany Turner converted a layup with just over a minute to go to give the Jags a 57-55 lead and set up the Anderson steal.

Crest climbed back into the game after trailing 35-20, by completely dominating the boards in the second half. They outrebounded the Jags 40-27 on the night, marking the first time in six games Forestview has allowed their opponent to out rebound them. The Chargers converted many of the offensive boards into baskets, but still shot only 32% on the night.(21-66)

Forestview connected on 43% (22-51), including 6-17 from the arc. They were a dismal 9-21 from the free throw line though. The Jags, now 6-3, won't play again until next Wednesday when they meet Burns in the opening round of the First Charter Holiday Tournament, hosted by East Lincoln. Game time is slated for 10:00 am.

The Jags are hoping to have starter Chrissy Buie back by then. Buie has been sorely missed on both the defensive and rebounding aspects of the game. Her willingness to do the "dirty" work is something the Jags have got to get back.

Merry Christmas to all!!!!

Jags Erupt Offensively In 91-69 Win

The Lady Jags were in a precarious position coming in to tonight's game versus Kings Mountain. The Jags basically go seven players deep in their regular rotation and that was reduced to five tonight, as starter Chrissy Buie and reserve Sara Sumner were out with injuries. This meant the Jags were forced into a different style, at least on the defensive end, where they played a zone, with no press the entire first half. But the Jags adopted, as all five starters scored in double figures and they soundly defeated Kings Mountain 91-69.

It wasn't as easy as the score appears though. The Mountaineers jumped out to a 11-2 lead and held on for a 20-13 lead at the break. Kings Mountain would go on to shoot 41% from the floor which kept them in the game.

The Jags went on a 26-6 run in the first six minutes of the second quarter and basically, semi-cruised from there on out. Forestview shot 49% from the floor, primarily because they were able to get in their running game which got them a large amount of layups.

Forestview did press in the third quarter, and doubled the Kings Mountain turnover total, but only managed to increase their lead by four points.

Whitney had another solid performance, with 16 points and 8 assists, on 4-8 from the floor (3-4 from the arc) and 5-5 from the free throw line. It was her passing again, that hurt her opponent the most. She continuously found open people which got the Jags high percentage shots most of the evening.

The Jags teamwork was once again a pivotal factor, with 26 assists on 34 made field goals. Senior Hayley Anderson added 13 points, 5 rebounds and a career high 8 assists. It was Anderson that kept the Jags in the game early, until everyone else could get on track.

Jessica Capers led all scorers with 23 points, while Jasmine Camp had 19 points and 5 assists and Ashley Pratt 17 points and 14 rebounds.

Forestview won the battle of the boards 35-31 but gave up entirely too many offensive rebounds, as the Jags had no focus on the defensive boards.

The 5-3 Jags are now averaging 65 points a game and shooting 40% from the floor. They open conference play Tuesday night when they play host to Crest.

Jags Lose Close One To Shelby 60-58

The Lady Jags hot shooting finally took a night off, as did the defense and rebounding, and they dropped a close one to Shelby, 60-58, in the last :03.5 seconds. Forestview controlled the game most of the way, although it was close throughout.

Whit hit two threes to start the game, as the Jags built a 21-14 lead after the first quarter. Although Shelby remained close, the Jags had forced the Lions into nine first quarter turnovers and were seemingly in control.

Shelby began assaulting the Jags on the boards though, and closed the gap to four, 34-30 at the half. The Jags enjoyed a 53-33 rebounding edge against the Lions on opening night, but tonight would be different. Despite winning the battle of the boards again, 49-43, many of Forestview's rebounds were on the offensive end after missing close range shots in the paint. To make matters worse, Shelby converted on most of their offensive rebounds.

Two Jags starters fouled out at the six and five minute mark of the fourth quarter, before a third starter went down with an injury just a minute later. The Jags remained composed though and the game was tied with under thirty seconds to play. After a missed 15 footer, the Lions picked up another offensive board and were fouled on the ensuing shot. Both free throws were made and the Lions had their win.

The Jags shot but 29% (22-76) from the floor and were 11-17 from the charity strip. Shelby was 34% (21-61) and 17-31 from the line.

Whit finished with 14 points for the third straight game, to go along with 6 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. She again had a stellar floor game, with just two turnovers. The Jags tied a season low set the previous night with just 17 turnovers.

Hayley Anderson recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, while Ashley Pratt pulled down a career high 16 rebounds and Chrissy Buie, a career high 9 rebounds.

The 4-3 Jags are off until next Monday, when they travel to Kings Mountain, before opening conference play at home on Tuesday against Crest.

                            Whit Paces Jags With Double-Double

Whitney recorded her first high school double-double, with 14 points and 11 assists, as the Jags defeated Charlotte Latin convincingly 77-46, for their third straight win. And although Whit had several highlight passes, this was a tremendous team effort as five Jags scored in double figures.

Forestview jumped to a quick 9-2 lead and lengthened that to 20-11 after the first eight minutes. Latin would not fold though and played the Jags tough in the second eight minutes to cut the halftime deficit to seven, at 34-27.

The Jags turned up the defensive heat in the third quarter, outscoring Latin 20-10 to put away the win. Once again Coach Ken Beaty was able to get the starters some much needed rest as they complete their third set of back to back games tomorrow night. Most of the starters played right at three quarters.

Jessica Capers led all Jag scorers with 20 points, while freshman Ashley Pratt added 16 points and 11 boards, both career highs. Jasmine Camp chipped in with 12 points and 4 assists, while Hayley Anderson added 10 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Whit also had 4 rebounds and 3 steals to go along with her double-double.

The Jags shot 47% (34-73) from the floor and are now at 41% on the year, as a team. Their 77 points marks the third time this season they have scored 70 or better. The defensive intensity has picked up also, as opponents are shooting a dismal 29% over the last three games.

With that being said, a tough opponent awaits them Tuesday night, when they play host to Shelby. The Jags beat Shelby for an opening night road win, 73-69, but did not play up to par in that game. Forestview is now 4-2 on the season.

Balanced Attack Paces Jags Over North Lincoln

For the second time this season the Jags placed four players in double figures, and after jumping to a quick 9-0 lead, they never looked back as they defeated North Lincoln 70-40.

Whitney had her best all-around game of the season, connecting on 5-8 from the floor, including 4-6 from the arc. She finished with 14 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds, despite playing only three quarters. Coach Ken Beaty was able to use his bench freely in the second half, a luxury we have not had this season.

Jasmine Camp led all Jags with 18 points and 5 assists followed by Jessica Capers 14 points. Hayley Anderson added 12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 blocks.

The Jags shot 51% from the field (31-61) while holding North Lincoln to 23% (15-65) and forcing them into 28 turnovers. The Jag press was pretty much unstoppable in the first two quarters, helping the home team to a 38-15 lead at intermission.

Most impressively was the Jags had 23 assists on their 31 made field goals. This team has demonstrated early on, their willingness to play unselfishly and put winning above everything else. It is surely a thing of beauty when the Jags score off of the break without dribbling the ball.

The Jags running game has them shooting 39% from the floor through the first five games. Obviously, 40% would be a terrific mark to be at before the Christmas break. Their 59 point per game average on offense is below the 70 point a game goal, but that only demonstrates an area where we still need to improve.

Now 3-2, the Jags have their third set of back to back games next week, playing host to Charlotte Latin on Monday and Shelby on Tuesday.

Jags Back On Winning Track 53-43

The Jags broke a two game losing skid, forcing 39 Weddington turnovers as they beat Weddington for the first time in three years. The Jags led by as many as eighteen, early in the final quarter and cruised to a 53-43 win.

It wasn't pretty though, as Forestview got sloppy in the second half and turned the ball over 22 times themselves. The Jags shot 38% from the floor and were led by Jessica Capers and Jasmine Camp with 16 and 13 points respectively.

Whitney finished with 5 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists, marking her second straight game with as many assists.

The Jags, now 2-2, play host to North Lincoln on Wednesday night.

                              Lady Jags Lose Second Straight

For the second consecutive game, the Lady Jags dug themselves an early hole and couldn't get out, as they lost to R-S Central 59-55. The Jags managed only 6 first quarter points and trailed by 9 after the first eight minutes. RS then scored the first ten points of the second quarter and held their biggest lead at 29-8.

To the Jags credit though, they fought back, outscoring RS 47-30 the rest of the way, but falling just short.

Whit had six points, six assists and four rebounds, while four other Jags scored in double figures. Whit's biggest contribution came on the defensive end though, where she held RS leading scorer Frances Hernandez to just three points.

The Jags shot 41% to the Hilltoppers 32%, but 35 Jag turnovers were a big part of their problem. RS also connected on 13-27 from the free throw line, while the Jags managed only 7 attempts, connecting on 5.

The Jags(1-2) play host to Weddington next Tuesday.

                                Hilltoppers Turn Back Jags 62-46

The Lady Hilltoppers of R-S Central jumped to a 11-0 lead in the first four minutes and held the Jags to 29% shooting, as they defeated Forestview 62-46. It marked the fifth consecutive loss to the Hilltoppers since the beginning of Whitney's high school career.

The Jags allowed too many offensive rebounds which lead to baskets, as their legs showed weary on the second night of back to back games. Despite trailing big early on, the Jags fought back, cutting the halftime lead to 28-20 after trailing by 13 points coming into the second quarter.

Whit never got on track from the field, going 0-6, but did manage to find her way to the free throw line five times in the first half, converting 5 of 10. She was the Jags second leading rebounder with 7, while committing just 2 turnovers.

The Hilltoppers pressed the entire night, making shot attempts scarce for Whit, as she primarily passed to break the press. It was the Jags press of their own that got them back in to the game though, as they outscored R-S by 7 points in the two middle quarters. Forestview came as close as three in the final four minutes, but could get no closer. The Hilltoppers converted 7 of their last 8 free throw attempts in the final minute to seal the victory.

The Jags had 29 less field goal attempts tonight than opening night, despite turning the ball over almost an identical amount. (26 tonight, 27 opening night). R-S turned it over 21 times with the Jags converting on many of those.

The lack of rebounding was vital though, in that the Jags could not get into their running game, and were forced into taking lower percentage shots.

Forestview will have a chance of redemption on December 2nd, when they host the Hilltoppers in their next game.

Jags Overcome Sluggish Start In Opening Win

The Lady Jags overcame a horrendous offensive start, which saw them shoot 2-17 from the floor in the first quarter, but overcome a twelve point first half deficit, to beat Shelby 73-69 in the two school's season openers.

For the first time in her career, Whit found herself in foul trouble and on the bench much of the game. She eventually fouled out with just under two minutes remaining, but her backcourt mate, Jasmine Camp was there to pick her up.

Camp scored a career high 28 points, to go along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists, while fellow Sophomore Jessica Capers added 21 points and 19 boards and 5 assists.

The Jags trailed by as many as twelve, before closing to three points at the half, 26-23. The Jags put up 50 second half points though and held on for the victory.

Forestview forced 7 first quarter turnovers, but all five starters had two fouls in the first eight minutes and the Jags were forced out of their press, which played a big role in the Lions shooting 44% from the floor. The Jags shot only 36% from the field (29-80) and 41% from the free throw line (12-29).

Whit finished 1-9 from the field and 2-2 from the line for 5 points, 3 assists and 1 rebound. Clearly she was disappointed in being in foul trouble and not shooting well, but most of her shots were on line, so she'll have to forget quickly, as the Jags travel to R-S Central Tuesday night.

Hayley Anderson added 7 points and 10 boards, while Chrissy Buie chipped in 8 points and 7 rebounds.

                           Whit Nabs 2nd Straight MVP

For the second time in as many seasons, Whitney was named Forestview High School's Most Valuable Player, at the awards ceremony held Monday night.

Whit was the team's third leading scorer at 9.9 points per game, while leading the team in assists, steals, charges drawn, and three pointers made. She was second on the team in free throw percentage and fourth in blocked shots. Although the stat is not kept, she was also the leader in minutes played.

Although her scoring average dropped by a point per game this year, this was more a tribute to the Jags having a better all-around team than anything else. Whit attempted 5 less shots per game this year than last, and again, was usually the focus of the opponents defense. However, this also contributed to the success of our post players.

Once again, it was Whit's overall leadership and unselfish play that were her biggest strengths though. These traits not only help the Jags to be a better team, but also tend to keep her teammates happy.

Overall, Whit actually had a better season this year than last. She was able to focus more on her point guard duties and continue to strive to make the players around her better. Great job Whitney!!!

                              Whitney Is Beta Club Inductee

Whit received a nice academic honor this week, when she was accepted into the Beta Club. The club requires a composite 3.5 grade point average. As proud as we are of her basketball accomplishments, the academic honors are more important.

On another note, with just one week of school remaining, Whit is on her way to completing another year of perfect attendance, something she has done every year in school. Great job Whit!!!!
